We’re kickin’ it on KickStarter

Our little company, Purdy Little Things, began in December 2009 with an adventure in making handmade Chirstmas gifts.  By January 2010, we started offering handmade Scrabble tile pendants for sale through Etsy and Facebook.  Then we opened www.purdylittlethings.com.  We began adding new products every few months, and really expanded when we started offering boutique-style jewelry.  By late summer, we launched our Friday Night Facebook Purdy Sale…….something we’ve pretty much become infamous for…..and are still going strong after 2 1/2 years.

Now we offer dozens of handmade products and bring in 12-20 NEW boutique items each week!  Our website is going through an overhaul and we’ll relaunch www.purdylittlethings.com by summer 2012.  And now, after years of slowly expanding, we are getting further along on our business plan and we are ready to bring you our line of Purdy Sweet Tees!  Our Southern-style tee shirts are coming to you from here in the Deep South.

We’ve tested the graphics, asked our customers about color options, found a fabulous LOCAL tee shirt shop, tried on lots of sample sizes of shirts and have the designs ready.

We have choosen to use KickStarter, a crowd-funding website, to launch the line and take pre-orders.  We will take pre-orders through June 3rd, go to print in June and you’ll get your shirt in July – in time to show it off for the summer!  Kickstarter allows you to pledge your support by pre-ordering your tee shirts at a price of $25/shirt, which includes a FREE gift and shipping.  You can choose from 7 designs (some shown in the video, on Facebook;  www.facebook.com/purdysweettees and our website; www.purdysweettees.com  ).  Each will be available in sizes for men, women, juniors and kids.  Kickstarter will process the orders and handle payments for this initial pre-order stage.  This is a cool way for us to gain support for the new business and be part of a really cool process – crowd-funding!

We hope you are ready for it!  Here we come…..Purdy Sweet Tees! Thanks for supporting our journey and expansion.  If you are ever in Starke, come by and we’ll thank you with a glass of sweet tea!

Pinterest Project: Canvas Makeover

I love Pinterest.  Super, HUGE, puffy, glittery heart love!  I probably use Pinterest almost every day, at least if I have a few spare minutes to take in some eye candy.  You can keep David Beckham, I will take a folder full of new DIY craft project ideas on Pinterest any day 🙂

I have dozens of boards I have created….for my imaginary home, imaginary closet, imaginary kids, imaginary travel budget.  But I do have a few that seem realistic, things I will actually do, say, cook, wear or maybe even buy.  Today I am showing off one of my recent Pinterest-inspired projects – a canvas makeover.

I loved this idea when I saw it, but making it proved a bit more difficult than I thought.  I went to the Dollar Tree, Family Dollar, Walmart and Dollar General thinking I could find a cheap canvas painting for less than $10.  No such luck.  Then we went to a few yard sales back in February and on our first stop, I found a pair of matching canvas paintings.  $5 for BOTH!  The colors were vivid and they were big and on great shape.

First step:  check

Second step:  finding letter stickers.  Another challenge!  Michaels’s (craft store) has plenty of scrapbooking letter stickers, BUT if you look close at them, most letter stickers have borders that round them out and the outline no longer resembles the actual letter.  30 mins of staring at sticker packs, I found some that would work…..I hope.

Here is the project:

Picture 1:  working on the wording.  I did draw pencil lines to help me stay straight with the stickers!

Picture 2:  Stickers on and in place!  This is one of my favorite quotes from a classic book –

“In vain have I struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.”  ―    Jane Austen, Pride And Prejudice

Picture 3:  Paint over the entire canvas.  Be VERY careful not to push paint under the stickers.  You can paint over in a full stroke, just don’t press too hard on the stickers.  And likewise, take the brush and push down on the letters to push out any paint at the edges of the stickers.  I put on about 3 coats of black acrylic paint with a foam brush.

Picture 4:  all finished.  Let paint dry overnight, then VERY carefully remove each sticker.  Use a toothpick to pop the edge up of the sticker if it is difficult.  Mine came up pretty easy – and I only had a few runs of paint under the stickers.

You can do it too!  Share your pics with me on Pinterest!  /purdylilthing

NEON – Light it up for spring

As a child of the 80s, I remember neon fondly.  I had neon pink shoelaces, neon colored jelly bracelets (a whole arm of them), neon yellow jelly shoes, neon green headbands……I could go on, but surely you get the picture.  20+ years later, I can relive my childhood with yet another comeback-trend.  The return of neon!

Now, as a mother in my mid-30s, I don’t see myself pulling on neon green pants to wear to the grocery, but even I will consider a pop of color with my favorite black dress or gray blazer.  My current favorite accessory is a mustard yellow bubble-gum bead necklace that looks AH-mazing with gray.  But, given this new trend, I am thinking I will try out a little neon green next week.

Here is a sneak peak of a few of the neon pieces coming to Purdy Little Things this week – hope you are ready for a trip down memory lane.  Good thing I loved the 80s!

Necklaces retail for $10.  Bracelets retail for $6.  Available for purchase on Friday night at www.facebook.com/purdylittlethings during our weekly sale.

Welcome to our Purdy world, y’all!

Many of you know us as Dana & Shane, the couple behind Purdy Little Things.  Over the past two years, we have become close to many of our customers and fans.  We have meet y’all, had a drink with some of you, have followed your personal lives on Facebook and seem to have welcomed a second family to our own.  You were there when Shane and I got married, you support us when we have adversity and you are are light at the end of the tunnel every Friday night.  So, I think its about time we shared even more of ourselves with you!  Welcome to our Purdy world!

Follow this blog as we share personal tidbits on our relationship and our family; talk about new jewelry trends; preview new Purdy Little Things products; ask you for advice; watch Dana get creative; and watch Shane learn how to blog (LOL); and hopefully, watch our business and our family grow.

This will be more than just a quick few sentences on Facebook – we want you to know who we are and that we appreciate you as customers, fans and friends.  Plus, its fun to share!
